Ruth Gemmell, who plays matriarch Violet Bridgerton on Netflix’s *Bridgerton*, has revealed she learned about her character’s sex scene only during a costume fitting — and that the discovery initially left her in tears.
“I was a little bit shocked,” the 58-year-old said in a recent interview. “I was in a costume fitting, and I realized that I was being fitted for something that I had no idea was going to happen.” She said she went home and cried following the revelation.
The scene pairs Violet with Lord Marcus Anderson, played by Daniel Francis. Gemmell noted that the production team approached filming it differently than the show’s younger cast members, joking that they relied on “a lot of low lighting.” Despite her initial reaction, she said she was ultimately satisfied with the result.
Gemmell also spoke to the broader significance of depicting romance for an older character. “We don’t die after a certain age,” she said. “It’s very lovely to see young love and love for the first time, but it’s also very important to see somebody who has loved and lost and grieved and comes with a myriad of baggage — because everyone can identify with that.”
The storyline may not end with season four. Executive producer Shonda Rhimes recently indicated she is considering a spinoff centered on Violet Bridgerton. “I’ve always said that if we were going to do something like that, Violet would be a great person to tell the story about,” Rhimes said on a recent podcast appearance.
Off screen, several cast members have their own romantic storylines playing out. Nicola Coughlan, whose character Penelope Featherington found love on season three, has been linked to actor Jake Dunn. Phoebe Dynevor, who played Daphne Bridgerton in season one, became engaged to producer Cameron Fuller, debuting her ring at the 2024 Met Gala. Actors Sam Phillips and Bessie Carter, who play opposing characters on the show, have confirmed a real-life relationship.
Regé-Jean Page, who departed the series after season one, has maintained a low public profile but has been seen regularly with copywriter Emily Brown since 2021. Jonathan Bailey, who plays Anthony Bridgerton, has described himself as being in a private relationship with a man, telling one outlet in late 2023 that maintaining a personal life away from public scrutiny is essential to him.
Simone Ashley, who joined the show in season two, confirmed a relationship with Tino Klein in 2023 before announcing a split in early 2025. Luke Newton, whose Colin Bridgerton finally won Penelope’s heart on screen, was photographed with dancer Antonia Roumelioti following the show’s 2024 London premiere. Charithra Chandran, who played Edwina Sharma in season two, has remained private about her personal life but received attention for her lead role in the 2024 romantic comedy *How to Date Billy Walsh*.
Claudia Jessie, who plays the romantically reluctant Eloise Bridgerton, met her partner — casting editor Cole Edwards — on the same day she auditioned for the role. “I got a job and a fella on the same day,” she told one publication. “It was a great day for me.”
